Manifesting technology

As an apple fanboy, I have been following iPhone rumors since December 2006 when they appeared on every other article on Digg. Once the keynote in January announced that the phone would be available in June, I kept thinking how I could get one. Coincidentally, the contract with my phone company at the time was going to be over by June, so that would not hold me back. However, I just couldn't get over the $500 price tag associated with getting a phone (after signing a 2 year contract!).
So I had held onto my old phone and kept the option of having an iPhone open…without actively saving for it or having any sort of plan. I knew I would have the iPhone eventually, so I decided to not worry about stressing the 'how' associated with getting the phone. As my birthday started creepign around in early September, I began to think of what gift I should ask for from my parents. I really wanted a digital camera because I happen to love wandering and taking pictures. I also wanted an iPhone because my phone was starting to fall apart and I didn't have the heart to get any other phone. At that time the digital camera I wanted was around $300 and the iPhone was $500, so it looked like the digital camera was going to win.
However, right before my birthday, Apple decided to drop the iPhone price by $200, selling the soon-to-be-discontinued 4GB phone for a more $299 instead of $599. After hearing this I made a bunch of calls and researched the possibility to actually own the phone. When I told my parents that I wanted money toward an iPhone for my birthday gift, they decided to just pay for the phone outright for me. Sweet! I ran over to the store and picked one up as soon as possible and haven't looked back since.
So after being so happy about how that phone situation worked out, I realized that I was not going to be getting the digital camera that I wanted as a gift. I figured that I'd have to wait until another big holiday or make an unexpected amount of money on the side to get one.
But then after a few days, my parents came into the house with a new digital camera for themselves. I was puzzled because their old camera was less than 2 years old, so when I asked them about it they told me that they weren't sure if they could hold enough memory on the camera so they decided to get a new one.
So guess who got to keep the old camera?
Now that I brought these 2 items into my life, I have begun to think about how these two successful situations were different from other times. Here's what I came up with:
I genuinely wanted each item
I had the idea of having both items in my head for a long time (at least a month for both)
I didn't limit the idea of getting these items to involve me actually buying them
I was concerned with the 'what', not the 'how'
It was not a "I'd better get 'x' or else!" situation. Instead, I was often thinking of how nice it would be to have these items without demanding to have them
This is a far cry from what I usually do, but that's probably why it worked.
